The Bakken Oil Play
The Bakken play is described as the most significant oil
discovery in the last forty years. The 2008 United States Geological Survey estimated that there are around 4 billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Bakken and Three Forks formations.
Technological advances including horizontal drilling and
hydraulic fracturing have made producing the Bakken and Three Forks formations commercially viable. The technology and techniques developed in the Williston basin have been applied to other shale plays in Texas, Pennsylvania, Colorado and other locations. But as Harold Hamm, the colorful billionaire oilman who heads
Continental Resources, states plainly; “There’s only one Bakken.”
Challenges and OpportunitiesOil and gas exploration has spurred on unprecedented economic activity throughout western North Dakota. The drilling activity alone represents an average of $2 billion each month in capital investment. In 2011, the building permit valuation in Williston was $383 million compared to $172 million in Fargo, a city six times larger than Williston. The enormous economic activity is creating many challenges and widespread opportunities.
Communities are struggling to expand roads, water, sewer,
and other infrastructure to accommodate the near doubling of population in many areas. An acute shortage of housing has driven up rental rates and real estate prices. The influx of people has resulted in long lines and waits at restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations and every other retailer.
Many have recognized these challenges as opportunities. Businesses and investors throughout western North Dakota and far beyond are participating in a truly unique economic opportunity.
